Student Activities

About

The Student Activities Office supports and partners with students as they engage in identity and community building as well as leadership development through co-curricular involvement.

As part of the Division of Campus Life, the Student Activities Office (SAO) leads campus efforts to support 450+ student groups.

In addition, the office provides oversight and coordination for three facilities that serve the Brown community — the Stephen Robert '62 Campus Center and both T.F. Green Hall and Alumnae Hall auditorium for student performing arts. Student Activities also works closely with the Undergraduate Council of Students to recognize and support student organizations.

Our Mission

The Student Activities Office supports and partners with students as they engage in identity and community building as well as leadership development through co-curricular involvement. Through mentorship and advising, we utilize a growth-centered pedagogical approach to foster creativity, skill building, and critical thinking.  We cultivate an ethos of ownership and autonomy, by helping students to develop skills to work through challenges, and an understanding of what it means to be a thoughtful and responsible community member. In support of Brown’s educational mission, we bridge students’ academic pursuits with their lives outside of the classroom while promoting an inclusive campus community.

We have organized our responsibilities into five areas:

  1. Student group and program support including event planning and coordination, advocacy for student group needs, coordination of University services that support student events and activities, management of risk and liability, and the provision of financial and customer service.

  2. Maintenance, renovation, and promotion of student-centered facilities including the Stephen Robert ‘62 Campus Center, TF Green Hall, and Alumnae Hall, resulting in welcoming spaces where students can convene and find a sense of belonging.

  3. Advising using an individualized approach focused on experiential learning, accountability, and critical thinking. As creative partners, we work with students to help them accomplish their goals while navigating group dynamics, policies and procedures, and relationships with campus and community partners.

  4. Leadership development focused on student and group development including peer-to-peer leadership, individual advising, roundtable trainings and discussions, and departmental programs such as BOLT.

  5. Community building through departmental events and programs as well as student event support to foster community and interactional diversity. As managers of multiple campus spaces, we work to ensure accessibility, safety, and to create opportunities for all members of the campus community to engage with each other.
