The Gate

Located on the ground floor of Alumnae Hall (194 Meeting Street), the Gate can be directly accessed using the north-facing door across from Miller Hall. Brown ID card swipe access is required to enter. Reservations are required to use the space; see the Gate reservation policy below.

Situated directly below the Alumnae Hall Auditorium, The Gate first opened as a campus ice cream parlour on Pembroke Campus before being integrated into the Brown University Dining Services as a small campus eatery. As a late-night eatery that was primarily staffed by students, The Gate served pizza, sandwiches, and grab and go convenience items and doubled as a lounge for students to gather. The Gate eatery closed in 2014 when the Andrews Dining Hall opened on Pembroke Green and sat dormant until 2020 when it was used as an emergency testing and vaccination center for students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Renovations on the space began in the summer of 2024 to transform The Gate back into a versatile, multipurpose space designed to build campus community. It is now open to Campus Life departments and student organizations to host meetings, rehearsals, practices, events, and other gatherings.

At this time, The Gate can only be reserved by Campus Life departments and UCS- and GSC-recognized student organizations. To check availability or to reserve the Gate, please utilize the 25Live space request system through the University Scheduling Office

  • Weekday requests between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM will be prioritized for Campus Life departments.
  • Evening (after 5:00 PM) and weekend requests will be prioritized for UCS- and GSC-recognized student organizations. Events, activities, and room reservations must end at the following times:
    • Sunday-Wednesday: 12 AM
    • Thursday (into Friday): 1 AM
    • Friday-Saturday (into Saturday/Sunday): 2 AM
  • Event reservations by UCS- and GSC-recognized groups must be accompanied by an event registration with the Student Activities Office. Event Managers will be granted card access to the Gate following event approval.
  • Groups may request up to one recurring event per week with a maximum duration of 2 hours, including set up and break down time. This is to maximize the accessibility of the space to all groups.
  • Events in The Gate, Alumnae Hall Auditorium, and the Crystal Room may be disruptive to one another. If an event reservation in one of these three spaces exists and a request is made for another space, Student Activities staff will work with the groups to assess whether the events can co-exist. If it is determined that a latter request will be disruptive to existing requests, the new request will not be approved.
  • All users are responsible for disposing of trash properly, cleaning any mess, and returning furniture to its original place. Failure to do so may affect the ability to make future reservations in the space. All event-specific custodial orders will be billed to the requesting department.

The Space

The Gate consists of two primary event spaces, The Gate and the Gate Annex. These rooms can be used alone or in combination, and when making a reservation for The Gate, you will automatically have access to both rooms. An additional conference room is available to Campus Life departments during business hours upon request with a confirmed room reservation. The room set up is flexible and may be configured in multiple ways to accommodate many events. The available standing capacity is 400 persons; set ups with furniture will accommodate fewer people due to the addition of furniture (e.g. lecture with a maximum of 200).

Bathrooms are located in the hallway outside The Gate and across from the Office for Military Affiliated Students (OMAS). Although The Gate is accessible and ADA compliant from the exterior doors at the north and east sides of the building, the closest ADA compliant restroom is outside of the Alumnae Hall Auditorium, which can be accessed via the external lift. Additional ADA compliant restrooms are located in the Verney Woolley Dining Hall or Smith Buonano Hall.
