Situated directly below the Alumnae Hall Auditorium, The Gate first opened as a campus ice cream parlour on Pembroke Campus before being integrated into the Brown University Dining Services as a small campus eatery. As a late-night eatery that was primarily staffed by students, The Gate served pizza, sandwiches, and grab and go convenience items and doubled as a lounge for students to gather. The Gate eatery closed in 2014 when the Andrews Dining Hall opened on Pembroke Green and sat dormant until 2020 when it was used as an emergency testing and vaccination center for students during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Renovations on the space began in the summer of 2024 to transform The Gate back into a versatile, multipurpose space designed to build campus community. It is now open to Campus Life departments and student organizations to host meetings, rehearsals, practices, events, and other gatherings.
