Organizations
The purpose of Stop Torture RI (Brown University Chapter) shall be to work in alliance with local community organizations including Stop Torture RI and Direct Action for Rights and Equality (DARE) to further their goals related to reducing harm in carceral settings in Rhode Island including ending the use of extended solitary confinement through such campaigns as: ending RIDOC’s reliance on long-term solitary confinement, closing the High Security Center, preventing forced out-of state transfers, and preventing the construction of new carceral facilities. We shall also bolster the voices of those impacted by incarceration as we believe no decisions should be made without the input of those who are most directly affected by the Department of Corrections’ practices: incarcerated people and their loved ones.
Eligibility to Stop Torture RI (Brown University Chapter) is open to all full-time undergraduate members of the Brown community and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, age, national or ethnic origin, disability, status as a veteran, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or sex. Majority Membership consists of full-time undergraduate students.
