Teochew Association

Organizations

The Teochew Association (TCA) at Brown University fosters a welcoming environment and inclusive space for students from all backgrounds to celebrate Teochew culture. The Association aims to preserve Teochew heritage through educational events and experiential activities.

In face of cultural loss, the Association provides a “home away from home” for the Brown Community by organizing cooking nights, Teochew language and culture classes, and community events to nurture linguistic diversity and cultural appreciation among all students.

Teochew — sometimes romanized as Chiuchow or Chaozhou — refers to Han Chinese people from the Chaoshan region, located in the eastern Guangdong province of China. In the 1800s, following war and famine, many Teochew emigrated from China, shaping the modern-day Teochew diasporic population. Currently, sizable Teochew populations are located in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam and the U.S., among other countries.
