FORMER DIRECTORS
Fran Lo (2002-2004)
After Dean Robin Rose stepped down as Director of BOLT, she turned over much of the responsibility to the new Director of BOLT and Leadership Coordinator Fran Lo ‘97, a former BOLT participant and leader.
Fran moved on in the summer of 2003 to work with the Pipeline Project at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. In 2003, the program found its current home in the Student Activities Office.
Tommy Hayes (2004-2005)
Tommy Hayes ’98 was the next in line to have the honor of serving as BOLT’s Director and became the Interim Coordinator for Student Activities. Tommy, like Fran, was a BOLT participant and leader in his time as a student at Brown. After a year in the interim role and with the Appalachian and Continental Divide Trails, under his belt, he set out to finish the “triple crown” by hiking the Pacific Crest Trail.
Shelley Adriance (2005-2016)
In July of 2005, Shelley Adriance came on board for BOLT as part of her duties as the Coordinator for Student Activities and Leadership Programs. If you ask her, BOLT is what drew her to Brown. Over the years, her portfolio of work within the Student Activities Office changed. She served as the Associate Director for Leadership Programs while still directing BOLT. Shelley greatly contributed to the program by adding several new routes, growing the leader class, and raising funds for BOLT’s financial aid program. After 11 years, Shelley relocated with her family to Vermont in September of 2016.
Rachael Wise (2017-2020)
Rachael Wise joined the team as the Assistant Director of Student Activities and BOLT in January of 2017. She brought years of experience working with both student activities and outdoor leadership programs. Rachael enjoyed seeing BOLT grow and develop throughout her tenure until March 2020.
Matthew Branch (2020-2021), Dean Robin Rose (2020-2021), & Kathryn Lubrano Robinson (2021)
Matthew Branch, Associate Director of Student Activities, managed BOLT in an interim capacity from spring 2020 to summer 2021. Matt began working at Brown in October 2015 and ensured that BOLT stayed strong throughout the initial challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. Matt partnered with Dean Robin Robin, who returned to a more active role in BOLT, and Kathryn Lubrano Robinson, class of ’91.
Kathryn was a BOLT participant in 1988, the program’s very first year, and continued on as a leader and Student Manager during her time at Brown. Kathryn’s career has spanned education, the non-profit sector, and hospice work. She joined the BOLT staff in 2021 as the Technical Coordinator to help plan a modified trip during COVID. Kathryn was happy to reconnect with BOLT after 30 years, dust off her outdoor skills, and work closely with Robin and Matt to ensure that a trip took place in fall 2021.
Stefanie Argus (2021-2022)
In August 2021, Stefanie Argus joined the BOLT team. Stefanie previously spent several years managing resident camps and outdoor programs for Girl Scout councils across the United States. She holds a Master of Arts in Adventure Education.
The BOLT community does not end with the students who participate and lead the program. The current and past BOLT Directors have a community of their own where the passion for the program and tips and tricks have been shared throughout the years. This community is one of the many reasons BOLT continues to not only survive but thrive and grow.
Cassie Sutten Coats (2022–2024)
Cassie Sutten Coats (they/them) ’16 was a BOLT participant, leader, mentor, and manager in their time as a student at Brown. Following graduation, Cassie worked in public health focusing on LGBTQ+ health equity and healthcare access. In June 2022, they returned to BOLT as the Interim BOLT Director after receiving calls from Shelley Adriance and Dean Rose to support the program. In October 2022, they returned to Brown full time as the Program Manager for Leadership Development and BOLT where they are thrilled to connect and partner with students to grow and strengthen BOLT as an accessible and affirming leadership program.
