The Leader Experience

The BOLT Leader community is a diverse and inclusive group dedicated to building community in outdoor settings (and everywhere!). BOLT Leaders are rising juniors and seniors who are committed to mentoring a group of BOLTers and building the BOLT community.

A BOLT leader’s goal is to create an environment where every member of the BOLT community feels comfortable and can translate their BOLT experience into making an impact in the greater Brown community. Leaders will ensure a safe, rewarding, and educational experience for their group of BOLTers.

A leader must complete 180 hours of training during the Spring to prepare them to lead and facilitate a BOLTer group in the Fall. This training includes workshops focused around facilitation, conceptual skills, medical certifications, as well as outdoor & technical skills. Leaders will also take part in a 5-day Training Trip, where they will be led by former BOLT Leaders to further develop and evaluate their skills. Towards the end of their training, Leaders are matched with (2-3) co-leaders. These co-leads will ultimately help to facilitate the Fall Trip. Outside of that, the co-lead teams will work together closely throughout BOLT Fall Programming and beyond to nourish and maintain their BOLT groups.

At the end of the summer, Leaders will return early to participate in a 3-day Retraining module to review critical skills, check gear and finalize plans before participants arrive. After Retraining and our exciting Packing Day, co-leaders lead a five-day outdoor trip in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. When they return, they continue to serve as a mentor to their BOLTers by creating opportunities for community connection and personal growth. Leaders provide the foundation for BOLT’s sophomore and new transfer student advising and support.

Being a BOLT leader is a large commitment. However, the investment in training teaches you skills applicable beyond BOLT while integrating you into the supportive BOLT community.
